See the Signs of Roof Damage and Prevent your Residential Roof from Falling Apart!

As you relax in your living room, the last thing you want to feel is a drip of water on your head. When a roof is damaged, water seeps into your home through tiny cracks in the roof. Because water does not always drop down straight, it might be difficult to find these water spots.

Are you a homeowner who has never had any roofing troubles, or a homeowner who hasn't observed or isn't aware of the impact that could lead to major roofing problems in the future? As you may be aware, it is prevention is better than cure. Have you had your roof inspected by a professional residential roofing contractor? If you haven't already then keep an eye out for these indications of water damage to prevent roof damage from becoming severe and ensure you're the most prepared homeowner in the area.

Water Damages

Ceilings and walls stained by water. Some of the most obvious indicators of roof leaks can be found inside the house. Dirty water stains may emerge on the ceilings and walls. Water spots or moldy places on the rafters of your attic or along the siding outside your home can also indicate a leak.

Shingles

Missing shingles, stones, or tiles are one of the major signs. Heat and wind can loosen and displace things from their original places over time. Animals are also capable of removing shingles from their strips. As a result of missing shingles, the roof is vulnerable to further damage from wildlife and the elements. The patchy regions can be repaired without affecting the roof's performance or life expectancy if found early enough.

Venting

Shingles are curling at the edges. Roofing shingles curl up at the edges due to improper attic venting, ice dams, and age. Curled or cupped shingles are brittle and will fracture or shatter readily when put under stress. Rain and/or heavy winds cannot be protected by shingles that do not lay flat.

Soffits that are filthy and clogged

Attic ventilation is essential for your home's health. It all starts with inhaling outside air through soffit vents, which are required to create an airflow that transfers warm attic air out the roof vents. When air enters the soffit, it normally goes into the attic by an air chute or some other access along the underside of the roof. The plastic air chutes in each rafter spacing keep the air path free from the rafters and the roof sheathing. Clear soffits help to avoid moisture buildup and ultimately mold growth on your roof’s framework.

Gutters that have rusted

Gutter leaks are most commonly caused by rusty places or seams that have opened up due to expansion and contraction. If your gutter is still in good shape, the simplest solution to stop the leak is to use roof and gutter repair tape to cover the damaged area (available at home centers and hardware stores). Remove rust with a wire brush and tar with a putty knife first.

Roof damage isn't always easy to spot. You might not see a few missing shingles behind a gable or shingle granules on the ground. Roof leaks might last months without leaving noticeable water stains inside the house.
